Meningococcal patient meets Ja-Ala: “No need for undue fear”
A senior official of the Ministry of Health said that a 49-year-old resident of Ja-Ala area, who was infected with meningococcal bacteria and developed brain inflammation (meningitis), was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. A doctor mentioned.The senior spokesperson of the Ministry of Health said that the condition of the concerned institution is not a problem and there is no report of contact between the infected person and the inmates of the Galle prison.
He stated that the disease is under control and the Ministry of Health has all the information regarding the disease so people should not be unduly afraid.
He also said that a patient infected with meningococcal bacteria, which killed several inmates of Galle prison, has been identified for the first time in Colombo district.
The infected person is a person working in an institution in the Ratmalana Health Medical Area and has been admitted to the Kotalawala Defense University Hospital due to a fever.
After several tests conducted at the Kotalawala Defense University Hospital, the patient was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.
Attempts were made to contact the director of the Colombo National Hospital on 15 occasions to inquire about this matter, but he could not be contacted.
Dr. Chamal Sanjeeva, President of the National Movement of Health Professionals, said that the measures taken to control the spread of brain fever in the Western and Southern Provinces and the irrational fear that may arise in parents regarding the spread of this disease among children should be dealt with.
He further said that an appropriate program should be prepared to control this situation and the Director of Health Services in charge of the Western Province and the Director of Health Services in charge of the Southern Province should intervene in this regard.
